University of Cambridge’s Department of Engineering and CISL Join CCBP’s Academic Advisory Group

The University of Cambridge’s Department of Engineering and the Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) has joined the Centre for Construction Best Practice’s (CCBP) Academic Advisory Group, strengthening the centre’s mission to connect industry and academia through evidence-based research in the built environment.

CCBP’s Academic Advisory Group (AAG) brings together leading research institutions from across the UK, including University College London’s Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction, Queen’s University Belfast’s School of Natural and Built Environment, the University of Leeds School of Civil Engineering, Loughborough University’s School of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering, and the University of Edinburgh School of Engineering.

Alongside its academic partners, the centre works closely with an Industry Advisory Group (IAG) composed of tier-one contractors including BAM, Kier, Morgan Sindall, and Wates. This collaboration ensures that research findings are informed by real-world experience and can be applied effectively across major construction projects.

Earlier last year, the centre worked alongside its advisory groups to launch a research paper into the benefits of Early Contractor Involvement, gaining quick backing from Government.

The University’s involvement is a key part of the centre’s next research drive, which will focus on sustainability and how the construction sector can deliver more resilient, efficient, and environmentally responsible buildings and infrastructure. Their expertise will help shape the direction of this work and provide academic rigour to the centre’s evidence-based approach.

Robbie Blackhurst, Chair of the Centre for Construction Best Practice, said:

“The University of Cambridge is one of the most respected academic institutions in the world and we are honoured to have its Institute for Sustainability Leadership and Department of Engineering’s involvement in helping to drive CCBP and its research forward. Working alongside the Institute for Sustainability Leadership significantly strengthens our ability to bring well-researched, academic theory to the industry’s most pressing challenges, particularly around sustainability and long-term value.”

Dr Tim Forman, Course Director of ‘Sustainability Leadership for the Built Environment’ at CISL, added:

“The construction industry faces urgent imperatives to deliver better quality and value while meeting our most pressing sustainability challenges. Sharing evidence-based best practices is essential to delivering the resilient, efficient buildings and infrastructure our communities need. I am delighted to support CCBP as it works to meet these challenges.”

John Orr, Professor of Structural Engineering at the University of Cambridge Department of Engineering, added

“I’m pleased to be joining the advisory board for the Centre for Construction Best Practice. This is an opportunity to help shape the future direction of our industry, strengthening sector collaboration and supporting innovation across the built environment. I look forward to working with colleagues to advance best practice and drive meaningful progress for the sector.”
